Creating Your Own Puzzle Activity

When our lovely director Georgia Afendoulis created this puzzle activity, I knew I needed to try it with my daughter Avive who is 3 years old. Georgia has been working in childcare centres and after school programs for many years, and creating craft and artistic activities is truly a talent and gift that Georgia shares with the children. My daughter Avive really enjoys hands-on activities and skills like cutting, glueing, and drawing. What is great about this activity is that all the supplies needed are the typical ones most parents would have at home. We gathered our supplies together and started drawing our puzzle. We found thin cardboard in the recycling bin from our frozen pizza box and this worked great for this activity because it wasn’t so stiff to make the cutting too difficult. I helped Avive with drawing some of the patterns for the puzzle, as well as the cutting out of the pieces, but she did everything else. As we were cutting out our puzzle I started to get a little bit worried that we would not be able to put it back together because I saw it was going to be challenging! Fortunately I was able to piece it back together again with Avive helping. It also became a fun challenge for my husband and other extended family members to try, which they all manage to complete.

Creating a puzzle is a great way to develop children’s creativity and imagination, as well as dexterity and precision. In this activity your very own puzzle is created while developing all of these skills and more, such as patience and concentration. For ages 4 - 10, this activity is an opportunity to spend quality time with your children while developing them, guiding them to use scissors safely, and having a whole bunch of fun!

So what are you waiting for? Download it now and get ready to feel puzzled (hopefully not by the explanations though)!

Georgia Afendoulis, Director

I have been working with kids in after school programs for the past 6 years and I feel it’s important in this era to bring families and their children together with nature, doing activities as a family and keeping connected to each other. I believe empowering children is key because they will be the leaders of tomorrow.
